Education CS Julius Ogamba Pushes for Expanded Teacher Training to Bridge Skill Gaps

Education CS Julius Ogamba has called for expanded teacher training programs to address skill shortages in Kenya’s evolving education system.

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba has urged Kenya’s teacher training institutions to expand capacity and modernize courses to meet the needs of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

According to Mr Ogamba, the country faces a significant gap between trained and employed teachers, with over 183,000 students currently pursuing Bachelor’s Degrees in Education across local universities. However, postgraduate enrolment remains low, highlighting a need for more advanced specializations.

He added that public diploma colleges have a combined capacity of about 49,000 students, which is inadequate to meet the growing demand for qualified educators.

The CS emphasized that Kenya must prioritise specialized and technical teacher education to fill subject-specific gaps, especially in STEM and vocational training.

Ogamba’s remarks come as the TSC plans to promote 21,000 teachers in the 2025/2026 financial year, a move expected to enhance career progression and motivation across the education sector.
