Private Schools to Play Key Role in Senior School Transition

Kenya to integrate private schools into the digital placement system, expanding senior school options for Grade Nine learners.

The Ministry of Education has announced plans to include private schools in the upcoming Grade Nine to senior school transition, expanding opportunities for learners and ensuring inclusivity.

According to Prof Julius Bitok, Principal Secretary for Basic Education, private institutions will be fully integrated into the digital school allocation system, allowing learners to select them based on preference and capacity.

“Private schools have invested heavily in modern infrastructure and facilities. They must be part of the solution,” Bitok said.

This move comes as the ministry confirmed that there are 2.4 million available Grade 10 slots compared to 1.13 million candidates, ensuring a smooth transition for all learners.

By mainstreaming private schools, the government aims to ease pressure on public institutions while promoting quality education across all sectors.

Parents and learners will be allowed a one-week revision window after assessment results are released, mirroring the university placement process.

Education analysts say the inclusion of private schools will enhance competition, expand access, and uphold the spirit of public-private partnership in Kenya’s education system.
