TSC List of Current Job Groups with Corresponding Salary Scale And Allowances


The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) in Kenya is responsible for determining the job groups and salary scales for teachers employed under its jurisdiction.

Over time, these job groups have undergone various adjustments, most recently under the implementation of the 2021-2025 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). The salary scales differ based on the teacher’s qualifications, experience, and job group. Here is an overview of the current job groups and their corresponding salary scales.

1. Job Group B5 (Primary Teacher II)

This is the entry-level job group for primary school teachers, previously referred to as Job Group G. Teachers in this group earn a basic salary ranging from Ksh 21,756 to Ksh 27,195.  In addition to the basic salary, teachers are entitled to allowances such as house, commuter, and hardship allowances where applicable.

 2. Job Group C1 (Primary Teacher I and Secondary Teacher III)

This group encompasses primary school teachers who have been promoted and newly employed secondary school teachers with diploma qualifications. The salary range for this job group is between Ksh 27,195 and Ksh 33,994.

3. Job Group C2 (Secondary Teacher II and Primary Senior Teacher)

Job Group C2 includes teachers with bachelor’s degrees in education. The salary range is Ksh 34,955 to Ksh 43,694. It is also the starting point for graduate teachers in secondary schools.

4. Job Group C3 (Secondary Teacher I and Senior Teacher II)

This group represents teachers with additional responsibilities or experience. The salary in this group ranges from Ksh 43,154 to Ksh 53,943. Teachers in this category often take on senior roles such as department heads.

5. Job Group C4 (Deputy Head Teacher II, Senior Master III, and Senior Lecturer III)

This is a promotional group for teachers with additional administrative duties, such as deputy headteachers and senior masters. The salary for this group is Ksh 52,308 to Ksh 65,385.

6. Job Group C5 (Deputy Head Teacher I and Senior Master II)

Teachers in this group have substantial administrative roles in schools, and their salary ranges from Ksh 62,272 to Ksh 77,840. They include deputy headteachers in large primary schools and senior masters in secondary schools.

 

 7. Job Group D1 (Head Teacher, Senior Master I, and Deputy Principal III)

This group includes headteachers of primary schools and deputy principals of secondary schools. Teachers in this group earn between Ksh 77,840 and Ksh 93,408.

8. Job Group D2 (Senior Head Teacher, Senior Principal II, and Deputy Principal II)

Teachers in this job group hold senior management positions, including headteachers of large primary schools and senior principals in secondary schools. Their salary ranges from **Ksh 91,041 to Ksh 109,249

 

9. Job Group D3 (Principal and Senior Master I)

This group includes principals of secondary schools and senior masters in schools with a large student population. The salary for this group is between Ksh 104,644 and Ksh 125,573.

10. Job Group D4 (Senior Principal)
Principals in larger secondary schools fall under this job group. The salary ranges from Ksh 118,242 to Ksh 141,891.

 

11. Job Group D5 (Chief Principal)

 

This is the highest job group for teachers, reserved for chief principals heading national or extra-county schools. The salary ranges from Ksh 131,380 to Ksh 157,656.

Allowances

Apart from the basic salary, teachers also receive various allowances, which include:
– House Allowance: Varies by the region, with teachers in major towns like Nairobi receiving more.
– Commuter Allowance: Ranges between Ksh 4,000 and Ksh 16,000 depending on the job group.
– Hardship Allowance: Paid to teachers working in hardship areas, ranging from Ksh 6,000 to Ksh 38,000.

These job groups and salary scales reflect the career progression and compensation structure in the teaching profession in Kenya.
