Government Reassures Families on Affordable Higher Education

The Ministry of Education has reaffirmed its pledge to make higher learning accessible following the disbursement of Sh9.46 billion by the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB).

Education Cabinet Secretary Jullus Migos Ogamba confirmed that the money will support over 309,000 university students, with Sh5.76 billion directed to tuition and Sh3.7 billion earmarked for upkeep. He said the funds are part of the government’s wider strategy to reduce the cost burden of higher education for Kenyan families.

“The government will continue to provide the requisite funding to ensure that higher education remains affordable and that no student is left behind,” Ogamba stated.

The assurance comes at a time when parents and guardians are grappling with rising living costs. The new allocation, therefore, provides relief for families who rely on HELB loans to support their children’s education.

For students, the timely release is a major win. Many undergraduates depend on upkeep allowances to cover essentials such as accommodation, food, and transport. By addressing these needs, the loans allow students to focus on their studies without the constant worry of survival.

Universities, too, are set to benefit as tuition funds will be settled directly, eliminating disruptions that occur when learners cannot pay on time. This is expected to boost institutional stability, enabling them to deliver quality education consistently.

HELB’s role has been described as central to the country’s education ecosystem. Without it, thousands of students from low-income backgrounds would be unable to pursue higher education.

Ogamba emphasized that the government is keen on expanding funding capacity to accommodate growing student numbers each year. He added that consistent financing ensures equal opportunities and narrows the gap between privileged and disadvantaged learners.

This disbursement represents more than just financial aid—it is a reassurance to students and families that higher education remains within reach despite economic challenges.
