JSS Teachers Sign Return to Work Formula with TSC

The Junior Secondary School Teachers have signed return to work formula with Teachers Service Commission (TSC) calling of three weeks Strike.

The JSS Teachers had striked for three weeks, demanding pay rise of the salary by being converted to permanent and pensionable terms.

Bringing an end the three weeks Strike, Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet) said that the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has signed Return to work formula on 1st June 2024 by JSS Teachers.

All the 2023 JSS interns will be converted to permanent and pensionable terms as stated by the government. The JSS Teachers who had gone on strike will resume to school on Monday 3 june 2024 following agreement with Teachers Service Commission.

Their mediator, the Kuppet Secretary General Akello Misori said that TSC agreed to have all the show-cause letter served to striking JSS interns withdrawn as JSS had no union and therefore no ‘collective bargaining’

“Punishing the teachers for participating in legitimate labour action would be counterproductive to the stability in the sector,” Mr Misori said.Parliament had set Sh 8.3 billion to cater for 26,000 JSS interns’ conversion to Permanent and Pensionable in July 2024.

Kuppet will “lobby Parliament for the provision of Sh8.3 billion for the conversion of 26,000 intern teachers to permanent and pensionable terms in July this year,” explained Mr Misori. “The Sh8.3 billion should cater for all intern teachers hired in January 2023.”
