The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has refuted the authenticity of a viral list circulating on social media, which claims that Nyambaria High School topped the 2024 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) rankings with a mean grade of 10.87.
The purported ranking also included Cardinal Otunga High School, Kokuro Boys, and Alliance High School among the top-performing institutions.
In a statement issued on Thursday, January 9, KNEC flagged the list as fake, reiterating that it had not released any official school rankings for the 2024 KCSE results. The council warned the public against relying on unverified information and emphasized that dissemination of such false claims undermines the integrity of the examination process.
“KNEC wishes to categorically state that it has not released any school ranking for the 2024 KCSE results. Any list purporting to show the top-performing schools is fake and should be ignored,” read the statement.
The viral rankings sparked widespread debate and excitement among Kenyans, with many taking to social media to celebrate or critique the alleged performances.
However, KNEC clarified that its focus remains on ensuring fairness and accuracy in the examination results and not on releasing performance-based rankings for schools.
The council also urged the public to access official KCSE results through the designated portal results.knec.ac.ke and report any irregularities or concerns using KNEC’s toll-free numbers.
This incident highlights the growing challenge of misinformation in the digital age, particularly surrounding national examinations.
KNEC has reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the credibility of the examination process and urged the public to rely solely on official communication channels for accurate information.
