Over 178,000 Teachers Stuck for Years – TSC Now Demands Sh35.5 Billion for Long-Awaited Promotions

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has announced that it needs Sh35.5 billion to facilitate the promotion of over 178,000 teachers who have remained in the same job group for more than three years.

This move aims to address the growing discontent among teachers who feel demoralized and underappreciated due to a lack of career progression.

According to the TSC, a large number of qualified teachers across the country have not been promoted due to financial constraints. Despite meeting the minimum requirements for promotion, many have remained in the same positions for extended periods, with little recognition or increase in remuneration.

This situation has not only affected their morale but has also impacted the overall quality of education, as motivation plays a key role in teacher performance.

The Commission emphasizes that career advancement is critical for both professional development and effective delivery of education services. Teachers who advance in their careers are more likely to be motivated, adopt innovative teaching practices, and contribute positively to student outcomes. However, without adequate funding, TSC has been unable to carry out promotions as regularly as needed.

Out of the required Sh35.5 billion, a significant portion will go towards salary adjustments and backdated payments to ensure that promoted teachers are compensated fairly.

The Commission is seeking support from the government to allocate this amount in the upcoming budget. It argues that investing in teachers’ welfare is an investment in the future of the country’s education system.

Stakeholders in the education sector, including teacher unions and advocacy groups, have welcomed the proposal, calling it long overdue. They have urged the government to act swiftly and provide the necessary resources to the TSC, warning that continued stagnation could lead to increased dissatisfaction and possible industrial action.

TSC’s request for Sh35.5 billion highlights the urgent need to recognize and reward the hard work of teachers. Promotions are not just about salary increments but are a crucial component of career growth and job satisfaction.

Addressing this issue promptly will go a long way in strengthening the education sector and ensuring that teachers remain committed to nurturing the nation’s future.
