The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has unveiled 3,547 vacancies for Deputy Headteacher II (Regular) under T-Scale 9, making it one of the largest advertised categories in the 2025/2026 promotions. An additional 19 positions have also been reserved for Special Needs Education (SNE) Deputy Headteachers.
To qualify, teachers must have served as Senior Teacher I (T-Scale 8) for at least three years and maintained a satisfactory performance record. Beyond academic qualifications, TSC requires applicants to demonstrate leadership skills, mentorship capacity, and the ability to provide professional support to colleagues.
Deputy headteachers are crucial in the daily management of schools. They assist headteachers in enforcing discipline, supervising lessons, and ensuring smooth administration. Given Kenya’s rapidly expanding primary school population, filling these vacancies will strengthen school leadership at the grassroots level.
Applications must be submitted exclusively through the TSC portal by 25th August 2025 at midnight. Manual applications will be rejected. As part of the recruitment process, shortlisted candidates will be interviewed and required to present valid Chapter Six compliance documents.
TSC’s commitment to inclusivity is once again evident, with opportunities reserved for teachers in SNE institutions. This reflects the government’s broader goal of integrating learners with special needs into the mainstream education system while ensuring leadership is tailored to their unique challenges.
By advertising thousands of deputy headteacher posts, TSC seeks to motivate hardworking classroom teachers who have demonstrated leadership potential. This large-scale promotion is also expected to reduce stagnation in career progression, which has been a long-standing concern among teachers.
Ultimately, the new deputy headteachers will play a vital role in enhancing school performance and discipline, supporting headteachers, and driving the implementation of the Competency-Based Curriculum in primary schools across Kenya.
