Step-by-Step Guide: How Schools Can Access KNEC’s New Exam Materials

As the 2025 KPSEA and KJSEA examinations approach, the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has published updated sample papers and Optical Mark Recognition (OMR) sheets to help schools transition to the new assessment format.

To ensure smooth preparation, KNEC has outlined a detailed guide on how to access these vital resources through the Competency-Based Assessment (CBA) portal.

Below is a comprehensive, step-by-step guide for school administrators and teachers on accessing the newly introduced materials:

Step 1: Log in to the CBA Portal
Start by visiting the official KNEC CBA portal at https://cba.knec.ac.ke. Use your institution’s Assessment Centre credentials (username and password) to gain access. These login details are critical and must be kept confidential to protect sensitive data.

Step 2: Accessing KJSEA Sample Papers
Once logged in, navigate to the Grade 9 section of the portal. Locate and click the “Instructions & Sample Papers” button. This section provides access to various sample exams for different learning areas. Choose the paper you wish to view and click the “Download” button next to it.

Step 3: Downloading Sample Cover Pages and OMR Sheets
For both Grade 6 (KPSEA) and Grade 9 (KJSEA) resources, navigate to the respective sections. Click on the “Download Sample Cover Page and OMR” button. Here, you will find sample cover pages labeled by subject:

  • 601 – English Language
  • 602 – Kiswahili Lugha
  • 606 – Kenya Sign Language (KSL)

Each file has a “Download” button next to it, allowing for easy retrieval of the required documents. These resources help familiarize learners with the structure and presentation of the real examination papers.

Step 4: Log Out and Secure Data
After downloading the materials, it is important to log out of the portal. This helps maintain the confidentiality and integrity of exam-related data. KNEC advises schools to safeguard their access credentials and avoid sharing them to prevent unauthorized access.

This portal is part of KNEC’s broader initiative to streamline exam preparation and ensure uniformity across assessment centers nationwide. Teachers are encouraged to use these materials actively in lessons, offering learners a chance to practice with the exact format they’ll face in official assessments.

By following these steps, schools can better prepare learners for the upcoming assessments and stay aligned with KNEC’s updated requirements.
