West Mugirango MP Steve Mogaka Withdraws Case Against Nyamira University, Calls for Second Institution

West Mugirango MP Steve Mogaka has announced his decision to withdraw a legal case challenging the establishment of Nyamira University at Kiabonyoru Secondary School. Speaking to residents in Nyamira, Mogaka affirmed his support for the institution and pledged to advocate for the construction of a second university in the county.

โ€œI will be the last person to oppose the establishment of a university in Nyamira. I will withdraw the case against it in court on Monday,โ€ Mogaka stated, signaling a significant shift in his stance. He explained that his decision was driven by a desire to avoid being seen as a barrier to educational development in the region.

The case in question was initiated by 40 petitioners, including Mogaka, who cited various concerns about Kiabonyoru’s suitability as a university site.

Through their lawyer, Danston Omari, the petitioners argued that Kiabonyoru lacked essential infrastructure such as good access roads, adequate health facilities, and sufficient security to support a conducive learning environment.

They also accused President William Ruto of bypassing the Commission for University Education (CUE) in determining the universityโ€™s location, alleging political interference in the process.

However, Mogakaโ€™s recent remarks suggest he is now willing to set aside these concerns for the greater good of the county. โ€œI am a Christian, and I have left the case to God to judge the corrupt officials who hide behind ghost projects to squander public funds,โ€ he said. This move is aimed at ensuring the long-awaited university becomes a reality without further delays.

Mogaka also shared the historical context of the university project, emphasizing the efforts of former Governor John Nyagarama to bring higher education to Nyamira. He highlighted how Nyagarama had initially negotiated with Eldoret University to establish a campus in Nyamira.

However, this arrangement was later altered, transferring ownership of the project from Eldoret University to Kisii University. Mogaka expressed his frustration over the change, questioning the motives behind it but reiterated his commitment to advancing education in the county.

In a bold declaration, the MP revealed his plans to approach President Ruto with a request for a second university in Nyamira. โ€œNyamira deserves more than one university. I will personally ask the President to consider establishing another institution of higher learning in our county,โ€ he said.

Mogakaโ€™s proposal reflects his vision for Nyamira to become an educational hub, capable of fostering academic excellence and economic growth.

The decision to withdraw the court case has been met with mixed reactions. While some residents have welcomed the move as a step forward for education in Nyamira, others remain skeptical about the feasibility of constructing a university at Kiabonyoru, given the infrastructural challenges highlighted in the petition.

Mogakaโ€™s decision to pivot from legal opposition to active support demonstrates his willingness to prioritize community development over personal or political interests. By focusing on the larger goal of expanding access to higher education in Nyamira, the MP has taken a conciliatory approach that could pave the way for meaningful progress in the countyโ€™s education sector.
