In a progressive step toward inclusivity, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has announced that at least 5% of all teacher internship positions for 2025/2026 will go to persons with disabilities (PWDs). This allocation aligns with constitutional provisions and the Commission’s policy of promoting equal opportunities in education employment.
Applicants with disabilities will be required to present their National Council for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) cards during the verification process. Additionally, TSC has developed a special score guide for disabled applicants, ensuring that they are fairly assessed and not disadvantaged during interviews.
The guidelines also allow teachers with disabilities to be accompanied by sign language interpreters during interviews if they have hearing or speech impairments. Special consideration will also be given to visually and hearing-impaired teachers who may have enrolled for training with slightly lower academic qualifications in recognition of their circumstances.
By ring-fencing internship slots for PWDs, TSC is setting a strong example of inclusivity within the public sector. This initiative is expected to encourage more persons with disabilities to pursue teaching careers, while ensuring that schools benefit from the diverse skills and experiences these educators bring.
