List of TSC Requirements for Recruitment of PnP Junior Secondary School Teachers

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) of Kenya regularly undertakes recruitment exercises to hire qualified teachers for various educational levels, including junior secondary schools.

In response to the growing demand for quality education, especially following the implementation of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), the recruitment of permanent and pensionable junior secondary school teachers has been a significant focus for the TSC.

Requirements for Permanent and Pensionable Teachers in Junior Secondary Schools

To be eligible for recruitment as a permanent and pensionable teacher in junior secondary schools under the TSC, candidates must meet several key qualifications and requirements:

 1. Academic and Professional Qualifications

– Minimum Education Qualification: Applicants must have a Bachelor’s degree in Education (B.Ed.) or its equivalent from a recognized institution. The degree should be relevant to the subjects they will teach at the junior secondary level.

– Teacher Training: Candidates must have successfully completed Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) if they hold a degree in a field other than education. Alternatively, they should have completed a Diploma in Education for those applying with lower qualifications.

– Subject Specialization: The TSC typically requires applicants to have specialized in at least two teaching subjects relevant to junior secondary schools. These subjects must align with the TSC’s curriculum needs.

2. Professional Registration and Certification

– TSC Registration: All applicants must be registered with the Teachers Service Commission. It is illegal to teach without TSC registration, as outlined in the TSC Act. Applicants must produce their TSC registration certificate during the application process.

– Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) Certification:  Teachers must have the required certifications from KNEC, especially for teaching specific subjects like science, mathematics, and languages.

4. Age and Other Requirements

– Age Limit: While the TSC generally hires individuals below the age of 45 years, exceptions can be made depending on the applicant’s qualifications and experience.

5. Other Required Documents
– Academic Transcripts and Certificates: Original and copies of certificates from secondary and post-secondary institutions.

– National ID Card: Applicants must provide a valid national identification card.

The recruitment process for junior secondary school teachers by the TSC is rigorous to ensure that only qualified and competent individuals are selected. Candidates who meet the academic, professional, and ethical requirements stand a good chance of securing these positions.

By adhering to these guidelines, applicants can contribute significantly to the implementation of the CBC and the overall improvement of Kenya’s education sector.
