The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has opened application portal to replace 2,824 secondary school teachers across the country in December 2024. This recruitment exercise aims to fill vacancies created by natural attrition, including resignations, retirements, and deaths, to ensure uninterrupted learning in public secondary schools.
The move aligns with the TSC’s commitment to addressing the staffing needs of schools and improving the student-to-teacher ratio, a persistent challenge in Kenya’s education sector. According to the TSC, the vacancies are spread across various counties, with priority given to underserved areas facing acute teacher shortages.
Interested candidates must possess a minimum of a Diploma in Education, be registered with the TSC, and have a valid teaching certificate. In addition, applicants must demonstrate the ability to adapt to the demands of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), which has been a focal point of education reform in Kenya.
The recruitment process will adhere to TSC’s rigorous standards, ensuring fairness and transparency. Candidates will undergo interviews and assessments at the sub-county level, and selections will be based on qualifications, experience, and suitability for the advertised positions. Successful applicants are expected to report to their respective schools at the beginning of the 2025 academic year.

This initiative is a crucial step in addressing the shortage of teachers in secondary schools, a challenge exacerbated by increased enrollment under the 100% transition policy. By recruiting additional teachers, the TSC aims to enhance the quality of education and support the government’s broader goal of achieving equitable access to quality education for all learners.
The TSC encourages eligible candidates to apply online through its official portal, with applications closing by mid-December.
