The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has unveiled a detailed schedule outlining the confirmation of current Junior Secondary School (JSS) interns and the recruitment of new interns for the January 2026 intake. The plan ensures a smooth transition for the 2024/2025 intern cohort while bringing in fresh recruits for the next academic year.
According to the schedule, current serving JSS interns, who were recruited in November 2024 and began work in January 2025, will have their contracts concluded in early January 2026. Since their one-year internship limit will be reached, the TSC will convert eligible interns to Permanent and Pensionable (PNP) terms starting January 2026.
The process will kick off in November 2025 with payroll data capture, requiring interns to submit identification documents, KRA PIN, NHIF details, bank information, and academic certificates. In December 2025, verification and possible in-person vetting will take place at the sub-county level. Appointment letters for PNP positions will be issued in the first three weeks of January 2026, with the first PNP salaries processed by the end of the month.
Meanwhile, recruitment of new JSS interns will run concurrently. TSC will advertise approximately 24,000 internship slots in August 2025 for the January 2026 intake. Applications, interviews, and vetting will take place between September and October 2025, followed by the release of results in November. Appointment letters for successful candidates will be issued in December 2025, with reporting and orientation scheduled for early January 2026.
TSC emphasized that the two processes—confirmation of current interns and recruitment of new ones—will run side-by-side but affect different groups. This approach ensures continuity in teaching while meeting the legal requirement to end internship contracts after one year.
